There are days when it feels like I have 47 things floating around in my head at once.

Someone needs to be somewhere.

There’s something I’m supposed to remember for school.

Dinner has apparently become my responsibility again. 😆

And I know there’s at least one important thing I’m forgetting... I just can’t remember what it is.

When that happens, I’ve learned that trying to get organized usually makes things worse.

Instead, I check three things:

1. What absolutely has to happen today?

Not everything on the giant list. Just the things tied to today.

Appointments. Practices. Deadlines. Something somebody needs to bring somewhere.

2. What are we eating?

This one sounds ridiculously simple, but figuring out dinner early removes one of those questions that otherwise hangs over the entire afternoon.

It doesn’t have to be impressive. It just needs to be decided.

3. What am I most likely to forget?

This is the sneaky one.

The form that needs signing.
The thing you promised you’d order.
The library books that need to go back.
The birthday gift you need before Saturday.

If I can answer those three questions, I usually feel a whole lot more in control of the day.

Try it right now: Grab a piece of paper or open a note on your phone and write one answer under each question. Don’t make a full to-do list. Just three answers. Those are the things to get out of your head first.

Interestingly, the question...

“What do I need to know today?”

...ended up becoming the foundation for the new version of Household CEO.
